Der Musiker und Autor Kalaf Epalanga wird Kurator des nächsten African Book Festival in Berlin, das vom 16.-18. April 2021 zum dritten Mal die Stars der afrikanischen Literatur in die Hauptstadt holt.

Epalanga ist ein in Lissabon und Berlin lebender Musiker und Autor aus Angola. In den 90er Jahren gründete er die Musikgruppe Buraka Som Sistema, die später zur bekanntesten Vertreterin des Kuduro avancierte, einer angolanischen elektronischen Tanzmusik, und die dem Musikstil zu internationaler Bekanntheit auf den Tanzflächen der Welt verhalf. Zwischen 2006 und 2014 veröffentlichte das Kollektiv 4 Alben.

Epalanga schrieb als literarischer Kolumnist für die große portugiesische Tageszeitung O Público. Ausgewählte Kolumnen erschienen 2011 unter dem Titel Estórias de Amor para Meninos de Cor (dt.: Liebesgeschichten für farbige Kinder) sowie 2014 unter dem Titel O Angolano que comprou Lisboa (por metade do preço) (dt.: Der Angolaner, der Lissabon kaufte (zum halben Preis)) in Buchform.

Zuletzt erschien Epalangas Debütroman Também os Brancos Sabem Dançar (dt.: Auch die Weißen können tanzen, Editorial Caminho, 2017), der in der gesamten lusophonen Welt hoch gelobt wurde.

Nachdem das Festival 2018 unter der künstlerischen Leitung der deutsch-nigerianischen Schriftstellerin Olumide Popoola mit dem Titel „Writing in Migration“ sehr erfolgreich anlieft, fokussierte 2019 Tsitsi Dangarembga als Kuratorin „Transitioning from Migration“ Simbabwe. 2021 wird Kalaf Epalanga nun Angola unter dem Titel „Telling the Origin Stories“ ins Zentrum rücken. Besonders wichtig sei ihm dabei die Einbeziehung des gesamten portugiesischen Sprachraums und seiner hervorragenden Literatur.

Kalaf Epalanga is the new curator of the African Book Festival

The musician and author Kalaf Epalanga is the new curator of the African Book Festival in Berlin. The event takes place from the 16th-18th April 2021 and will once more invite the stars of contemporary African literature for the third time in Berlin.

Kalaf Epalanga is a Writer and musician born in Benguela, Angola and based in Berlin. As a musician, he co-founded the record label Enchufada, a creative and dynamic platform that promotes new music styles from Lisbon around the world, and went on to form the MTV Europe Music Award-winning band, Buraka Som Sistema (on hiatus since 2016).

He wrote a regular column of short literary chronicles for the prestigious Portuguese newspaper O Público, GQ Magazine (Portugal), the independent Angolan online magazine REDE Angola and collaborates regularly with the Brazilian literary Magazine Quatro Cinco Um.

He has published in Angola and Portugal two collections of literary chronicles ‘Estórias de Amor para Meninos de Cor’ (engl.: Lovestories for kids of color, 2011) and ‘O Angolano que Comprou Lisboa (Por Metade do Preço)’ (engl.: The Angolan who Bought Lisbon (at Half the Price), 2014).

‘Também os Brancos Sabem (engl.: The Whites Also Can Dance, Editorial Caminho, 2017)  published in Angola, Portugal and Brasil, is his first novel and was critically acclaimed in the Portuguese-speaking world.

In 2018, the African Book Festival´s first edition, curated by German-Nigerian author and poet Olumide Popoola, ran under the caption “Writing in Migration”. Last April, it was followed by “Transitioning from Migration” curated by Tsitsi Dangarembga from Zimbabwe. About 1.500 booklovers visited this edition for book presentations, readings, poetry, concerts, interviews and panel discussions. In order to portray the continent in all its diversity as accurately as possible, the artistic direction ch­anges every year. Thus, every edition of the festival will highlight different languages, writers, books, regions as well as political issues at the centre of the debates.

In 2021, Kalaf Epalanga now takes the centre stage with Angola under the capture “Telling the Origin Stories”, presenting literature, poetry and music from Portuguese-speaking parts of the world.
